Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk (lukewarm)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (divided)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 4 dyed uncooked eggs (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer bowl, dissolve yeast in lukewarm milk. Let it foam for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Add 1/4 cup sugar, eggs, and flour to the yeast mixture; stir until combined.
  3. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes.
  4. Add remaining flour, sugar, butter, salt, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and orange zest. Mix with a dough hook on low speed until a rough ball forms; knead on medium speed for about 7 minutes until smooth.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1½ hours or until doubled.
  6. Punch down dough and divide into eight equal pieces; roll each into a rope and braid them into wreath shapes.
  7. Place on lined baking sheets; cover and let rise again for about an hour.
  8. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Nestle one dyed egg in each loaf center; brush with egg wash and sprinkle with nonpareils.
  9. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire racks before serving.
