Ingredients

For the Patties
  • 500 g Ground Beef (or mix of pork and beef) Can substitute with turkey or just pork
  • 1 medium Onion (finely chopped) Use yellow or white onion for best sweetness
  • 1 piece Stale Bread Roll (or 2 slices of white bread) Fresh bread must be lightly toasted
  • 100 ml Milk Non-dairy milk can be used as a substitute
  • 1 large Egg No alternative suggested
  • 1 clove Minced Garlic Can be replaced with garlic powder if fresh is unavailable
  • 1 tsp Mustard Any mustard type works
  • 1 tsp Paprika Smoked paprika enhances the dish further
  • 1 tsp Salt Basic seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper Provides subtle spice
  • 1 tbsp Chopped Fresh Parsley Substitutes include other fresh herbs like cilantro or chives
For Frying
  • 2 tbsp Oil for Frying Olive oil or vegetable oil can be used

Equipment

  • Frying Pan

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Start by soaking a stale bread roll in milk until it's softened, about 5 minutes. If using sliced bread, remove the crusts, tear it into pieces, and let it absorb the milk.
  2. Once the bread is soaked, gently squeeze out the excess milk and place the softened bread into a large mixing bowl. Add the ground meat, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, mustard, paprika, salt, black pepper, chopped parsley, and the egg to the bowl.
  3. Using your hands, thoroughly mix the ingredients until everything is evenly combined.
  4. Once mixed, form the meat mixture into medium-sized patties, about 1.5 cm thick. Set the shaped patties on a plate.
  5. In a large frying pan, heat oil over medium heat until it shimmers, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Carefully add the patties to the hot frying pan. Fry each side for about 4-5 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Once cooked, transfer the patties onto a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
  8. Serve warm with sauerkraut, potato salad, or your favorite dipping sauce.
