  • 1 lb ground beef replace with ground turkey for lighter option
  • 14.5 oz canned diced tomatoes fire-roasted varieties recommended
  • 1 cup heavy cream can substitute with cream cheese or coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning swap with basil and oregano if needed
For Sautéing
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium sweet yellow onion can use shallots instead
  • 3 cloves minced garlic adjust quantity to taste
For Seasoning
  • to taste salt
  • to taste black pepper
  • optional freshly grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Bring salted water to a boil in a large pot. Add uncooked pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and reserve a cup of pasta water.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté chopped onion for 4-5 minutes until translucent and fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef and minced garlic to skillet. Brown the beef for about 8 minutes, breaking it up until no pink remains. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, Dijon mustard, and Italian seasoning. Allow to simmer for 4-5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Reduce heat to medium and mix in heavy cream, cooking for another 3-5 minutes until heated through.
  6. Season sauce with salt and black pepper. Fold in drained pasta, adding reserved pasta water if necessary to adjust consistency.
  7. Remove from heat and top with grated Parmesan cheese if desired. Serve hot.
