  • 1 tbsp Basil
  • 1 tbsp Oregano
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Red Pepper Flakes Adjust spices to personal heat preference.
For the Gnocchi Mixture
  • 16 oz Gnocchi Fresh gnocchi can be used; skip boiling.
  • 2 cups Marinara Sauce Substitution: Crushed tomatoes with garlic and herbs can substitute marinara.
For the Cheesy Topping
  • 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese Use part-skim for a lighter option.
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese Substitution: Pecorino Romano can be used for a stronger flavor.

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • Baking dish
  • pot for boiling water

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sausage is well-browned and slightly crispy.
  3. Once the sausage is browned, stir in the marinara sauce along with your selected spices—basil, oregano, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes. Reduce the heat to low and let this simmer for about 5 minutes.
  4. In a separate pot of boiling water, cook the gnocchi according to package instructions, which typically takes around 2-3 minutes. Drain the gnocchi and gently fold them into the sausage mixture in the skillet.
  5. Carefully transfer the entire mixture into a baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle a generous layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
  6. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes until the cheese becomes bubbly and golden brown.
  7. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
